Executive Chef

Chef Desmond Smith was appointed Executive Chef of Epoch Restaurant in Exeter, New Hampshire, in September 2018. With a love for classical French cuisine, he is known for putting a fresh spin on timeless classics. He considers himself “a student of the world,” which has helped his creative cuisine garner a lot of attention on the Seacoast.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Desmond’s early childhood took him abroad to both Switzerland and Africa as his dad worked for the UN. While Desmond earned a B.A. in history from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland, he will tell you the only real jobs he has held have been in kitchens.

Starting at age 14, Chef Desmond Smith spent years learning from various chefs around the world, serving as Chef de Partie at Ritz Carltons in both Florida and St. Thomas. Most recently, he spent three years with the popular Portsmouth Brewery, then transitioned to assist in the operations of their sister property Hayseed Restaurant in Hampton, NH.

Now firmly settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Desmond, when not at work, spends his time with his wife and young daughter.
